Published annually, the report gives an overview of the organisation’s performance and pathway to low-carbon, and showcases how its sustainable actions are making a difference to tenants and the homes they live in.

Highlights of this year’s report include record levels of investment in homes, with energy efficiency upgrades completed in over 160 homes thanks to funding acquired through Wave 1 of the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund.

99% of Midland Heart homes now have a minimum EPC rating of D, with over 77% at EPC C. These improvements supported the organisation achieving SHIFT GOLD accreditation earlier this year, making Midland Heart one of the top performing landlords in the sector for environmental sustainability.

The organisation has also handed over 670 new energy efficient, affordable homes to local people across the Midlands, and is on track to achieve its development target of 4000 homes built and/or acquired, within its current corporate plan period (2019-25).

Midland Heart’s detailed analysis of its ESG strategy and performance is supported by a series of case studies that evidence the real-life impact and progress that has been made for tenants, their homes and neighbourhoods. The organisation’s intervention programme is one example, an initiative to reduce higher-than-average levels of crime and ASB in 150 schemes, through tenancy enforcement and £5.8m investment in the security of the communal areas.

While our tenants are always at the heart of everything we do, our ESG strategy and performance has become more tenant-led than ever before. Alongside our operational highlights, in this year’s report we have documented a range of real-life case studies that show the impact we have had on the communities in which we serve over the last 12 months.

Joe Reeves, Executive Director of Finance & Growth at Midland Heart

Joe added: “As well as building the much-needed homes our region needs, we’ve made significant improvements to the energy efficiency of our existing homes. We’ve continued to move our EPCs in the right direction, with almost all of our homes now at a minimum of EPC D, and 77% at EPC C. These aren’t just operational targets; increasing the energy efficiency of our homes helps to keep our tenants warm in their homes, and their energy bills low.”

Midland Heart’s progress continues to be benchmarked against the Sustainable Reporting Standard for Social Housing, which supports consistent, reliable, and quality sector reporting.
